After you contemplate your choice of toppings, cheeses, and whether or not to add a salad, why not share some good ole fashioned trivia with your friends. The following Facts about Pizza will be sure to inform (and delight). The last slice of pizza goes to anyone who gets the most answers correct!

  • When did the first pizzeria open? The first known pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria, opened in Naples, Italy, in 1738.

  • What about in the United States? The first pizzeria in the U.S. was opened by Gennaro Lombardi in 1895 in New York City.

  • On average, how much pizza do Americans eat? Each person in the U.S. eats around 23 pounds of pizza every year and 93 percent of Americans eat pizza at least once a month.

  • How big is the industry? Pizza is a $30 billion industry in the U.S. with pizzerias representing 17 percent of all U.S. restaurants. Approximately three billion pizzas are sold here every year, plus an additional one billion frozen pizzas. That’s a lot of pizza.

  • What’s the most popular topping? That would be pepperoni. About 36 percent of all pizzas in the U.S. contain pepperoni. (And by the way, have you tried Block Pizza’s fabulous beef pepperoni yet? We highly recommend it).

  • Who’s more likely to eat vegetarian pizza: Women or Men? Women are twice as likely as men to order vegetarian toppings on their pizza.

  • Are there any official pizza holidays? Not yet, but since 1987 October has been officially designated National Pizza Month in the United States.

  • OK, so pizza has a whole month dedicated to it, but there has to be one special time of year when pizza is consumed the most, right? That’s right, and it has to do with the Big Game in February—you know the one. More pizza is consumed during the week of this national football game than any other time of the year.

  • Bonus: What’s the record for the world’s largest pizza? According to Guinness World Records, the world's largest circular pizza came from South Africa in 1990, measuring 122 feet 8 inches across and weighing 26,883 pounds. In 2005, the world's largest rectangular pizza came from Iowa. Pizza restaurant owner Bill Bahr and his team of 200 helpers created the 129 x 98.6-foot pizza, which was large enough to feed the town's 5,200 residents ten slices of pizza each. Whew! Now that’s a lot of pizza.
